Mental strength wins today!!

On the cross trainer this morning I thought to myself “Right, get back into the 4 mile session”. I set the target to 4 miles as upto now, and since starting the exercise again this year, I haven’t done any more than 2 miles. I have been walking a fair bit, but as part of my initial weight loss (around 2 years ago) I lost 2 stone by doing 4 mles.

I got to the 2 mile point and was almost ready to stop, thinking “Well 2 miles is better than none”, but I then kicked myself up the ass and carried on through. Some people may think “4 miles? So what? I run 8 miles or more a day” – well you carry on doing that and I will carry on exercising on my trainer and hopefully lose more and more weight!

Weigh in #1

Started on 3rd January this year, and today have managed to lose 3kg :) – I use MyFitnessPal to track all this stuff, and they have some HTML that I can add to my blog but I’m not sure how!!!

Let’s hope I can finish this diet properly, well not finish but attain a decent low weight especially with this possible 2nd DVT that I may/may not have in the same leg that already has one. Waiting to hear from the hospital to get an ultrasound, if it’s positive it means I will be taking Warfarin tablets for 6 months so fingers crossed it’s negative.

Back on the “Get Fat off” malarky

So, New Year (well it was when I got back onto my diet approx 2 weeks into January) new start.

Having been off the cross trainer, and generally not “being in the right headspace” I piled on 12lbs over a  7 month period that included Christmas. Really annoying because I had hit my 2 stone mark previously, and I really hadn’t been caning the bad stuff that much. It is proof that for me to shed the weight, and keep it off, I need to exercise and get back on the cross trainer.

At this point, I’ve lost 6 lb again and I now do my exercise in the morning before going to work. I find that I have more energy at this time of day – previously I was getting home so tired I couldn’t be bothered to exercise, and the times I did do it when I felt tired I strained my knee. Even now my knees are still my “Achilles heel” (even though they’re my knees) and they are sometimes really painful, which does hinder the exercise some what.

My goal is to get back to my 2 st loss, so another 6lb to lose and then another stone. We are looking to goto the Canary Islands in October time so I want to get some weight off by then. I am in the right headspace now, just need to tune my diet a bit more (mainly eating the right stuff again and portion control).

Wish me luck!!!

Metabolism

Mine has always been, on a scale 1 to 10, about 0.5. Having fallen slightly off the Keep Fit and Diet regime (the machine broke for a while and I also started eating some of the stuff I stopped, like bread!) I weighed myself today, and I’ve put on 7 pounds!! FUCK FUCK!!! This is over about 4 months or so I think.

I’ve always battled with weight. What’s annoyed me is that mini (who basically eats the same if not more naughty things, and exercises less than me) has never changed anything like +/- 2lb over the 11 years I’ve known him.

I need some new proteins or magic metabolism things. I’m back on the machine, and I’ve now got to get back to eating less of the stuff that I think causes this – maybe I have a wheat intolerance? Who knows, I doubt it. I have nibbled on chocolate and stuff, for crying out loud it’s nice and I just can’t not have a nibble here and there…..

Life is short I know, and they say the healthier you are the longer you live (normally). I guess I am just going to have to keep not eating the things I enjoy as much always. Either that or stick a Dyson in me and suck out 50% of my body!!

grumble mumble fukkity fuk fuk

It's all for charrrity mate!

On May 2nd this year, myself, friends and many others will be walking 10km in and around Brighton to raise money for Stonewall. Mini and me have been donating, via monthly direct debit, to Stonewall for just over 1 year now. We both think it’s a great cause and any money can help them help others – this has to be a good thing!!!

To help donate please visit our team donation page – http://www.justgiving.com/10kforpay

Thanks in advance!!

First blog of 2010!!

Twenty-Ten or Two-Thousand-And-Ten?? I prefer the latter, but I’ve been told its grammatically incorrect – pah!!

At the time of writing this, I’ve celebrated another year getting older, now the ripe old age of 41. Been stuck at home for 4 days now due to the adverse weather conditions. It’s walkable in parts, but as I have got knees made out of jelly I don’t tend to risk it, though saying that I am getting to the point of stir-craziness so will be looking to do something tomorrow, maybe dig the car out?!?

Had a lovely Xmas, a quiet affair as usual, and we think this year we want to do something with more people, so will be looking into the logistics of that nearer the time. New Years Eve was spent with a couple of friends. We cooked dinner – I did a Beef Wellington from scratch, even did herb pancakes – based on the recipe here. Was very very nice, and well worth the effort. As you can see from the URL, this is from the BBC Good Food site, which I now have subscribed to the monthly magazine – a really good publication which is always full of good recipes.

On January 1st I started my “Project 365″ wherein I aim to take a picture each day of the year. So far so good – I’ve not missed a day. Unfortunately there is a bit of a theme going on at the moment, that being Winter!! Still, it won’t be here forever and it will be good to go back over these at the end of the year. I am really getting into the photography now, since buying the Nikon D90 (I sometimes call it a Nokia, don’t know why) and it’s also encouraging when you get good comments about your pictures from strangers – hopefully I will be able to build up a good Flickr! profile and will be looking to print some out for hanging at home too soon. My Flickr! page is http://www.flickr.com/photos/markbarefoot if you would care to have a look.

After the Xmas indulgence I have now got back onto the “get fit and trim” bandwagon – I put on about 2.5kg over Xmas, which is not too bad, but also a bit annoying as I was only 2lb (1kg) away from my 2 stone (13kg?) loss – still I will carry on and my new goal is to hit my 2 stone loss and then do another 2 stone by June 2010 – fingers crossed!!!!

Off to Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons on the 24th Jan this month, looking forward to this a lot as it will be our first Fine Dining experience of 2010. Another one crossed off my list of Michelin starred restaurants – hopefully get the full list done this year!

Well, take care and will blog again when I have something to say!

Some analytical analysis from the training :)

After finishing my session for today (am now doing 5 miles) I updated my various sites and took a look at a few of the figures :-

Since May I’ve now done 86.3 miles

May = 1.4 miles, June started @ 1.2 miles and ended @ 3 miles, July 3 to 4 and  August 4 – 5!

My initial time lasted about 15 minutes, which after a few weeks I increased to doing a 30 minute session, not concentrating on the distance as much. Recently I now do approximately 35 mins covering 5 miles.

I average between 160 and 190 kCals per session

My cross trainer is the Bremshey Orbit Control

Getting fit….who thought that was a good idea!?!?

So, in January this year I got to the ripe old age of 40 (yeh yeh I know I look 20 years younger). I also thought it would be a good idea to try and “get a bit fitter”.

Now bearing in mind the only exercise I did was the bare minimal, any additional work would be a benefit. I decided that I would be sensible, and go see the doctor to get checked over. She advised me that my BP was a little high, and I then explained my health-kick and she said we should monitor it.

I then went and purchased a Bremshey Cross Trainer from my favourite shop, John Lewis. One driving factor for this choice was the amount of weight it could hold, and it had a funky control pad! So, my first stint almost killed me. .5 miles in and I was sweating like a child-worker in a sweatshop making Nike trainers. I was thinking to myself “Is this really a good idea?!!?”

Along with this jump into the unknown I was also starting to watch what I was eating. Not that I ate too badly to start with (most evenings included plenty of veg etc), but I would also partake in a few pints now and then, and also had a lot of bread and potatoes etc…..so my “new” diet now consists of less bread, using tortilla wraps at lunch time, and generally cutting down a lot on the “bad” things – so far I’ve lost 1 stone (it’s been fluctuating but life is life) over about a 2 month period.

Back to the crosstrainer, I slowly built up the distance from a paltry .5 miles, to now 3 miles which I cover in about 25 minutes. The good thing about the X-trainer I have, is that you can set profiles that allow you to modify the resistance, so you can emulate walking up hills, or having sustained high resistance with differing levels in between. I can see the changes already, albeit slight, and my moobs are shrinking! Hoorah….

So, my aim now is to shed another 1 stone in weight, ideally before our US holiday in September this year…watch this space!
